Spin Trim

(Trim/Compass/Captain)

You are a bit of a short order chef in that you have many jobs.  Your first role is to make sure Celeritas is perfectly prepared.  Always think about “how I can make the boat lighter and how I can lower the weight in the boat".  Please make sure we have a plan to have the

bottom cleaned every day at each event we sail.  The process in cleaning should be with the fine scotch bright pad so the bottom gets smoother each time.  You will also be the email voice to the crew.  I need you to send emails to each crew regarding flights, hotels, social events, boat call.  Any information that will help the team know, what, when and where.  Lastly I need you to be the guy that networks with the other captains to find out anything that may help us.

Pre Boat Call

* Check Weather
* Pick up Lunch and Liquid
* Prepare for water ballast
* Eat a good breakfast
* Bring the proper sailing cloths

Boat Call (before crew)

* Turn on weather
* Charge batteries
* Dry down deck
* Go down a check list from bow to stern
* Check marks on sheets, marks on decks
* Look over sail setting chart
* Make sure rig is at base (we always end the day and start the day at a base setting)

We will race always using a three man tack unless the wind is very light.  The process is when I say tacking in 3, you will go to leeward ready to release ( when to leeward help me with crossings if close, or at top mark decisions relative to fouls )  so at 1 you release and then hike out hard until we are up to target speed.  It will be important to practice release so we have a snap and never a luff.  I will explain this weekend.  Once we are sailing upwind I want to hear from you how we are going relative to the closest boat.  Always talk about us and it should never be more than every 15 seconds.  When I am trimming the main I really need to know the net result with boats close to us.   Down wind you will be trimming the spinnaker and always speak using TWA, it will be on the mast.

Pre Start

* Sail upwind for 20 min
* Sail against another boat to test our trim and tune
* Practice calling speed and angle
* Talk with Dan on jib settings
* Talk with me on rig setting
* Sail downwind for 20 min
* Agree with Malcolm on a good TWA number for the wind and water
* Practice a few jibes
* Practice a take down, leeward mark turn
* IN sequence you take the left jib, Aquil the right

Start-Upwind-Downwind

* Set jib close to mark, hike and talk speed and angle
* Prepare to release jib and think about conditions relative to practice
* Approaching top mark agree with Malcolm on the proper TWA after set (the quicker we sail the right TWA at the top mark the better)
* Down wind continue to talk but when in doubt ease more than trim
* Ask how we are doing  (like upwind, it is important to know how we are going)
* Keep thinking about the next move
* Anything you see that we need to know, speak up

After Race

* Compare notes with trim team, Dan, Aquil, Don
* Write down all settings and then agree on the right ones
* Clean up boat with crew
* Prepare for de-brief  ( I always have a crew debrief on the way in)  I really do not like the teams at the dock having the serious de briefs, it is better to do it on the way in.
* Set rig back to base, yet write down our settings for the day
* Delegate any jobs that need to be complete when returned
* Prepare the boat inside and out for next day before leaving (use the crew to help, I like the boat ready to race the night before so only the deck drying is necessary on race day)
* Network with other captains for clue.
