Jib Trim

Your job is to make sure Celeritas is sailing at a maximum VMG all the time.  I will discuss the differences latter, yet know we are getting the most out of speed is going to be critical for our success.  I can tell you are one of the guys on the boat that understands the total picture.  With your blessing I would like to change your positions on the boat for a period of time.  I think once we understand all the gears with the new sails we should go back to you trimming main all the time, yet for the short term I suggest having me trim the main only upwind after the start.  I would like you to be the guy that does the final trim on the jib and then sits to windward giving me information from the windward side.  I need to have Rob in the back with the box when we are hiking and in the companionway in the lighter breeze.  If I trim the main in the short term I will be able to understand the gears quicker so it will be easier for me to help you with proper adjustments.   So your role on Celeritas would be:

                     Speed & Smarts

A) Pre-Boat Call
        * Check Weather
        * Bring appropriate sailing gear
        * Have a high protein breakfast with plenty of fluids
        * Visualize sailing faster and higher than our competition upwind

B) Boat Call
        * Be involved with weather and dock tune
        * Read race instructions
        * Check jib sheets, winches, handles, traveler, trimming area
        * Help set up interior for the day’s condition

C) Pre-Race
        * Talk with me on jib set up
        * When tacking, Dave will release, Aquil will tail and you will do the final grind to an agreed mark.
        * If not final after back on the rail I will adjust jib
        * On rail you are talking to me about observation to weather
                                a) Boats to windward and their bow angle
                                b) Pressure to windward, better, worse, same
                                c) Who is where, by boat name
                                d) What you like relative to sides of the course
        * Top mark you set up spinn sheet for Dave and ease jib at top mark
        * Once jib is down you are back on the main
        * At bottom mark we are both on main around leeward mark, yet once in you adjust jib for final trim.  You will be to leeward so you can move easy to jib.

D) Pre-Start
        * You are trimming main while I am aft with Malcolm and Rob
        * Once we start, I move forward to main you check jib and then hike to windward and start talking to me

We will have marks for all adjustments and after each race we will write down the settings for the wind and waves and discuss the good and bad.  I want to have a ongoing discussion upwind when trimming relative to target speed and the settings to achieve our goals.

E) Post-Race
        * Compare settings
        * Discuss course and favored side
        * Contemplate new settings
        * Discuss goals for next race
        * List any items to fix
