Grind/Trim/Wind

,

I want to train you to be the "wind god" .  Just like the rest of the team you will have many roles to participate in yet I really need you to focus on two very physical jobs and then be the person that is always telling us what the wind is doing.  I am not looking for a forecast, opinion or a guess, yet expressing what you see.  Now if you can not see wind as clear as we need you to we will practice.  Make sure you have really good sunglasses and have the ability to use a different pair in cloudy vs sun conditions.  All wind is expressed in:

* More pressure in 3,2,1
* Light for 10
* Big breeze coming in 3,2,1
* Same pressure for awhile
* Wind back off

I do not care what term you use just be consistent.  When we are in the pre start you will be on the right side jib, yet after we start I would like you to hike and call wind while sailing up wind.  When we tack it will be a 3 man tack unless the wind is light.  The process will be on 3 Dave will go to leeward to release while you will grab the new sheet on the windward side.   At one Dave will release and you will tail when crossing the boat.  We will work on the timing this weekend.  Dan will then come over and grind for final trim.  Off the wind we need you grinding the sheet while looking off the windward quarter.  It get hard but you need to call pressure to Dave while listening to him about trim.

Pre-Boat Call

* Check Weather
* Organize your sailing clothes (do not bring them all)
* Get the proper breakfast to give the best energy for the day
* Call Dave to see if he needs any help

Boat Call

* Help rig the boat
* Help Dave store water
* Look at weather and anticipate the days condition
* Check over all marks on sheets and deck

* Look at yesterday’s notes on trimming
* Get boat ready to race

Pre-Start

* Sailing upwind call pressure  ( to get good at this you have to be willing to be wrong)
* When tacking tail while crossing yet find the proper stance for strength
* When tacking the jib should snap and not luff (we will practice, yet it is a balance of backwind and a quick tail)
* Release tail to Dan and get back on calling pressure
* At top mark make sure sheet is on cabin winch with handle (we are going to try trimming from cabin winches with short handles)
* Hike around mark hard and only come in once boat is flat
* Grind for Dave, standing to leeward calling pressure looking aft
* Prior to starting you will be trimming the right side jib, be ready to tail for Dave if necessary at start

Upwind and Downwind

In terms of importance it is:

1) Hiking hard if necessary
2) Tailing with perfect timing, grinding when necessary off the wind
3) Calling pressure

Post-Race

* De-Brief after cleaning up yet while we motor in
* Understand all settings of jib, rig
* Comment on how your job could be made easier
* Help Dave set rig back to base
* Help get boat ready now for sailing tomorrow
